Stiffness, as well as numbness or weakness, may all be signs of osteoarthritis, due to damaged bone pressing on the nerves. Rheumatoid arthritis may sometimes affect the neck, causing similar symptoms, but it more commonly appears in other joints and is usually accompanied by redness and swelling. In certain rare cases, the top bones in the neck can press on the spinal cord causing severe muscle weakness.
